Overview
Canada and China have a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement but no free trade agreement. The FIPA protects investments but does not reduce tariffs on goods.
What it includes
Provides dispute-resolution mechanisms for investment disputes
Establishes standards of treatment for investors
What it does NOT include
No tariff preferences on goods; trade follows WTO most-favoured-nation rules
No preferential services or procurement access
Does not remove non-tariff barriers or technical requirements
No framework for temporary entry of business persons
Markets it covers (of our 18 target markets)
China.
Practical note for exporters
China has no FTA with Canada; Canadian goods face WTO tariffs and China's standard import requirements. The FIPA protects investors but does not improve goods market access.
